Easy Halloween Jello Shots

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over but Halloween decorations are already appearing in stores and pumpkin spice has made its annual reappearance. In less than two months, it’ll be time for all the fun Halloween parties.

If you’re planning a Halloween bash this year, you’re going to need this Eyeball Jello Shot recipe. They’re quick and easy to make (4 ingredients!!) and super fun. The gummy eyeballs add a kinda creepy, kinda gross aspect that fits right in with the rest of Halloween.

Make these a day in advance so you have one less thing to prepare and they have plenty of time to set!

What You’ll Need

These easy eyeball jello shots require just 4 ingredients (and one of them is water!)

  • Red jelloCherry and strawberry jello both work for this recipe.
  • Water
  • Vodka – Any vodka you prefer will work, though I don’t recommend grabbing the cheapest bottle. (That’s just asking for a hangover!)
  • Gummy eyeballs – You may also be able to find these in the cake decorating section or in the Halloween candy aisle at your local store.

What’s The Best Alcohol For Jello Shots?

You can use pretty much any alcohol to make your jello shots. In this case, I recommend going for either vodka or a clear rum. Tequila tends to have quite a strong taste that can overpower the jello. But, if you love tequila or whiskey, go for it!

Since you’re mixing it with jello, there’s no need to go for a top shelf liquor. It won’t make much of a difference. BUT, do not use the cheapest either – it’s like begging for a hangover. (Ask me how I know!) Any mid-range liquor should be just fine.

Jello Shots Essentials

  • Condiment cups – Unless you have a large stash of shot glasses, you’ll want to make your jello shots in condiment cups. Most jello shots are made in 2 ounce condiment cups but if you want the shots to go further, you can use 1 ounce condiment cups instead.
  • Sauce pan – You’ll want to use a decent, non-stick saucepan for preparing your jello shots. We like this one.
  • Baster – A baster is my secret to easily filling the jello shot cups, without making a mess!
  • Measuring cups – To ensure you’re adding the right amount of water and liquor, you’ll want a decent measuring cup as well.

How to Make Eyeball Jello Shots

Ready to make these fun Halloween jello shots? There are just a few easy steps to follow.

  • Make the jello. Bring the water to a boil, then remove from heat and add the gelatin. Whisk for 3 minutes.
  • Add the vodka. Stir the vodka into the jello.
  • Chill. Transfer the mixture to the condiment cups. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  • Add the eyeballs. Add the gummy eyeballs and serve or return to the fridge until it’s time to serve.

Can I Make These Kid-Friendly?

These eyeball jello shots are obviously an over-21-only treat. However, if you love the idea and want to make it appropriate for those underage, just skip the liquor. You can create jello cups as normal and top them with the gummy eyeballs.

Tip – If you’re making both adult and kid-friendly eyeball shots, opt for two different colors of jello. Green jello is also very festive!

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a baking sheet. I find it much easier to work with jello shots when I place all of the cups on a baking sheet. It’s much easier to transfer them to the fridge and just keeps the process more organized.
  • Boil water in the microwave. For ease you can also heat the water to boiling in the microwave instead of on the stovetop.
  • Make sure the jello shots chill before adding the eyeball. Do not add the gummy eyeball until the jello has set. Otherwise, it’ll sink straight to the bottom and it may melt as well.
  • Make these shots a day in advance. Jello shots need a least 4 hours to chill before serving but longer is better. I recommend making these the night before the party for best results. Plus it’s one less thing to prepare the day of!

How to Store

These Halloween jello shots will last in the fridge for up to 5 days. Once they have set completely, you can easily add the lids and stack them on top of each other. Note that after a few days the eyeball may start to disintegrate from the moisture so keep that in mind.
