The Best Boozy Hot Chocolate

If you’re a huge hot chocolate lover, but also enjoy something a little stronger, this recipe is for you! This hot chocolate with alcohol recipe uses the basic ingredients that you would use for regular hot chocolate but adds a fun boozy twist. This chocolate cocktail is a festive option for holiday parties but is also perfect for curling up on a chilly night to enjoy a movie or for game night with friends.

The fats in this drink (milk or cream) will help avoid the alcohol burn taste that you often get in drinks like this. Smooth and creamy, this spiked hot chocolate will keep you warm all winter long!

What You’ll Need

  • Cocoa – You can’t make this drink without cocoa.
  • Milk – The milk really helps make the drink creamy.
  • Sugar – You can adjust the amount of sugar used to your sweetness preference.
  • Chocolate morsels – Chocolate helps make the drink even more chocolaty.
  • Kahlua – You already know this is what helps make the drink fabulous!
  • Whipped topping – This is optional but highly recommended!
  • Cinnamon for topping – Just a pinch of cinnamon helps complete the taste of the drink.

FAQs & Tips for Success

  • What’s the best alcohol for hot chocolate? Kahlua is used for this one but you could use any coffee-flavored liqueur of your choice. If you want a stronger alcohol taste, you can also try making adult hot chocolate with bourbon or even whiskey (Fireball is a great option for a cinnamon twist!)
  • Can I make this in advance? While I don’t necessarily recommend making this in advance, if you happen to make too much, you can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just reheat it on the stovetop and taste test to see if you need more alcohol!
  • Always add the alcohol last. You want to add your Kahlua/Bourbon/Fireball just before serving, once the hot chocolate has been removed from the heat. Otherwise you’ll cook off some of the alcohol and, well…we don’t want that!

Variation Options

This recipe makes a delightfully creamy, chocolatey adult hot cocoa but there are so many variations possible!

  • Switch up the chocolate. Use white chocolate or dark chocolate instead of regular chocolate morsels.
  • Serve it cold or frozen. If you’re one of those weirdos who likes cold drinks in the winter or maybe you want to turn this into a summer drink, you can erve this drink cold by adding ice and serving in a fancy glass cup. You can also make this a frozen drink by throwing everything in the blender and adding ice.
  • Add some flavor. If you’re a “chocolate AND” person, try adding some peppermint or cinnamon to this drink. A candy cane works great as a stir stick and adds some peppermint flavor or you can add a shot of peppermint liqueur. Ground cinnamon can be added or make it even more fun by adding a shot of Fireball!

How to Make Spiked Hot Chocolate for a Crowd

What happens if you want to make this spiked hot cocoa for a crowd? Just multiple this recipe by however many drinks you need to make. If preparing this for a party, I’d start by making this for 10 or 15 people. Prepare the cocktail as normal, though note it may take longer on the stovetop.

To keep your boozy hot chocolate hot, I recommend using a coffee carafe or extra large thermos.

Can I Make Spiked Hot Chocolate in the Crockpot?

Yes, you can easily make spiked crockpot hot chocolate! This is also a great way to keep large quantities warm at a party.

To make boozy hot chocolate in the slow cooker, just add all of the ingredients except the alcohol to the slow cooker and whisk. Turn heat to low for 3 hours. You’ll want to stir occasionally to avoid the chocolate sticking to the bottom of the pan. Turn to the “warm” setting and add the alcohol just before serving!
