Easy Bahama Mama Cocktail Recipe

This Bahama Mama tropical cocktail is just what you need for your next party. It’s a quick and easy mixed drink made with fruit juice and rum – several kinds of each, actually! Just combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker, serve over ice, and enjoy.

This cocktail originated in the Bahamas during the Prohibition, possibly at the Nassau Beach Hotel, when the Bahamas were used as a rum-smuggling destination. So, of course, they made a drink full of tropical flavor and every type of rum available!

There have been many variations of the drink since, some of which I note below, but one thing remains – any Bahama Mama is sure to pack a punch, with multiple types of liquor, and a fruity flavor. It’s now one of the most popular vacation drinks but it’s just as perfect at the end of any long day. Just imagine you are watching a tropical sunset from one of the Caribbean beaches!

What’s In A Bahama Mama Drink?

A Bahama Mama is a rum-forward cocktail made with three different types of rum – white rum, dark rum, and coconut rum – mixed with a bunch of tropical juices. In this recipe, I use lemon juice, pineapple juice, and orange juice. A splash of grenadine gives it a lovely pink-orange color.

Note that fresh juices, especially fresh pineapple juice, will give the best flavor.

Recipe Variations

  • Add Kahlua. This coffee liqueur is often added to the cocktail for extra flavor.
  • Omit the white rum. For a more coconut-y flavor, omit the white rum and add extra coconut rum.
  • Make it frozen. For a frosty treat, dump the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.
  • Add coconut liqueur. For a stronger coconut flavor, add a splash of coconut liqueur.
  • Use lime juice. You can swap the lemon juice for lime juice if desired.

Want to make your Bahama Mama cocktail for a crowd? Just multiply the ingredients by the number of serving you want and combine them all in a pitcher. Do not add the ice. Keep in the fridge until serving them pour into glasses with ice.
